Membership

Are you a Christian? Then you are called to unite yourself with a local body of Christians and become a member of a church. When we talk about membership in the local church, we are not talking about paying one’s dues and having one’s name on a list. To be a member of a church is to be vitally connected to a living, breathing body. Like the hand is a member of the body, or the ear or eye or foot. That is the biblical idea of membership.

The church is the body and Christ is the head (Colossians 1:18). To be a member of a local church is to commit yourself to the good of that body as a functioning part, even as that body commits itself to your good (1 Corinthians 12:14-27). Each member has a specific role to perform, and through covenant with the church agrees to:

  • Protect the unity of their church
    (Romans 14:19, Ephesians 4:29, Hebrews 13:17)
  • Share the responsibility of their church
    (Ephesians 6:18-20, Luke 14:23, Romans. 15:7)
  • Serve the ministry of their church
    (1 Peter 4:10, Ephesians 4:11-12, Philippians 2:3-4, 7)
  • Support the testimony of their church
    (Hebrews 10:25, Philippians 1:27, 1 Corinthians 16:2, Leviticus 27:30)
